Rendering

Producing 3D rendering is now required by customer and yard as soon as possible. There are different level of 3D rendering we can produce depending on time, budget and the stage of development.

I have attached 3 kind of 3D render. The fastest to produce is a black & white sketch style, it is actually done from a rough 3D CAD model and then sketch over it in Photoshop. It is very fast as the 3D model does not need to be accurate and we don't need to spend time picking colors.

The second one is also from a 3D CAD data but with more accurate data and then Photoshop in color and with texture. This is useful for customer to select colors and material.

The last one is produce using 3D CAD rendering software. It gives photo realistic render but it is very time consuming as we need an accurate 3D model for each parts and then pick the right material texture. For exterior rendering the lightening of the model is not too difficult but for interior rendering it can takes couple of days to create the right lighting scene. However when all the model is completed it is very quick to get render from any point of view. My PC took about 45min to create this render, but you can work on other thing while the PC is processing the render.

Hermione II

The Hermione reach the USA coast. She sails as fast as the original close to 14kts. I will love to go on her. I have heard on the radio that it needed no less than 80 crews to sail her.image_du_jour

Hardware

I have start using the 3D mouse (round thing with blue lighting) and a pen tablet for more than 10 years.

The 3D mouse is helping moving a 3D CAD model in software like Rhino for example. It is so much smoother and faster to see the model in the right view than using the normal mouse and click right.

It takes a bit of time to get use to it, but everybody I know cannot work without it passing the first week of use. It also helping moving drawing into Photoshop so you don't need to use the keyboard to zoom. This hardware is saving lot of time in general.

The pen tablet is a typical hardware to work on Photoshop.

Hermione

The original "Hermione" was built in the 18th century for General Lafayette. Her purpose was to go to the USA to fight against the English during the independance war.

It tooks 17years to rebuilt an exact replica of the ship in the same town where the original was made; this is very close to my hometown. The original only took 11months to be built.

The ship will mainly navigate by sail but for safety reason and harbor handling, two pod unit have been fitted.

Boat of the year 2015

Before to come to Japan, I was working at Sealine in the UK. The F380 is the latest model I have worked on. This boat has won the Motor Boat award 2015.

I have worked on the GA, the modified hull from the SC380 and produced the 3D model and structure calculations for the superstructure. I am glad this small flybridge has been appreciated by the industry. It is very hard to produce sub 40ft flybridge with the right level of quality and equipment within the tight budget required for clients. It tooks a while for it to be produced due to change of ownership at the yard but the result is great.
